Do you want to get your dream tattoo but you are not sure what you want, where on the body or what style or size? A little too often, people come into the studio who just want a tattoo, but they do not know what they really want. They look around the studio, looking in the portfolios, thinking they can only pick something out of there. Well, the portfolios are there just to show what we have already done so that we can showcase our style, what we can and what we like to do.

Many people end up regretting the tattoo that is inked on their body. Most of the time, these people did not take the time to really think about the consequences. This is why planning the perfect tattoo from the start is so important. Being impulsive has disaster written all over it.

The removal of offending tattoos is painful and expensive. Learn this lesson now or pay for it later. That is all I am going to say about this! Here are some suggestions on how to get started getting your perfect tattoo:

1. Let the tattoo find you, don’t look for it desperately.

Why do you want a tattoo? If you look desperately after your tattoo, it will most likely appear in several places and tempt you with a lot of different things, and it will be difficult to decide. When a tattoo appears by itself, it’s suddenly very natural to get it done. That feeling when you see a picture, a drawing, a photo from your past, remembering something that means so much to you and you think, “Yes, Perfect! This is what I want as a Tattoo!”

We do not recommend picking a design from a flash book, something we actually don’t even have in the shop anymore, or from Pinterest or Google. But please feel free to see and save some reference pictures from here that can show us what you like, style, color use, etc.

2. Try a tattoo

If it’s your very first tattoo, this option could really be for you. There are many ways of trying out tattoos before making up your mind. Remember that they are permanent, like for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, so it´s totally OK to try it out before going for the real deal. If it’s a small and simple tattoo, just have a friend help you draw in on your skin with a marker. Test different areas, and try to get used to the feeling of having it there for the rest of your life. You can also get temporary tattoos like we had when we were kids. At Kittytats.com you can get really beautiful and big ones to try, like these designs:

You also, in these modern times, try on tattoos virtually. I found this app, Inkhunter. Try on virtual tattoos with augmented reality before it’s inked forever. The app projects any dream tattoo design on any part of your body so you can see how it will look. Try on your own tattoo design, choose one from our gallery, or search the web.

3. Find a tattoo artist that does the style you’re after

Don’t shop around for the cheapest studio or artist. Do shop around for the best artist within your driving range. Go to a tattoo artist you really like the style of. If you don’t know who to go to, do some research, get on the web or listen to your friends. Instagram is probably the best doorway to Tattoo Artist Heaven. Just search your tattoo style or other tattoo hashtag search phrase, and start scrolling. Follow artists that you like. You can also ask tattoo artists who they would recommend for exactly that type of tattoo that you’re looking for.

4. Be open to custom art

Once you have found the perfect tattoo artist, they will make a unique design for you. Try to trust the artist, and let them do their thing, and come up with something artistic. You do not want a tattoo like 100, maybe 1000 other people have. Too many people get tattoos that are super cool right now. But tattoos have trends like everything else. And much of what’s cool today will not be cool in 10 years, maybe even within 3 years. All the tribal tattoos, barbed wire, Japanese signs, all of which are “old news” today, they were totally awesome at the time! So make sure you get a tattoo you will not regret later.

5. Plan the Perfect Placement

For your very first tattoo, it could be wise to choose a placement that is not the most painful on the body. Try to pinch yourself to feel the painful places. Often it is where you are more sensitive, have less meat and more bone, or is ticklish. The generally found places are the ribs, spine, feet, knees and of course the area that the bikini hides. The arm is a less painful alternative, legs and thighs are not too bad except for the insides of these.

Are you still unsure about the location? Do some research, look at others, look at pictures, think about where you want to place it and how big it should be. Want to see it yourself? Then you shouldn’t place it on your back. Do you want others to see it often? Then you shouldn’t place it on your hip etc.

6. Embrace the perfect size

Imagine a photo on a wall. Is it filled out to the frames? Or is there a small drawing in the middle of the sheet with lots of air around? Your dream tattoo should work as a great décor on your body, and preferably don’t look like a little birthmark so that people have to get really close to you to see what it’s supposed to be. The bigger the tattoo is, the more fine details you have room for, and it will last better with the years and not flow into a big blurry stain.

7. Speak up and Listen

Many people get tattoos without expressing their wishes to the artist clearly enough, and that can give you a tattoo that is different from what you really wanted. Either because you got a tattoo artist who doesn’t do that style, doesn’t like these motives, or doesn’t have enough experience to do it. Or maybe the tattoo artist misunderstand what you want and give you something you’re not totally expecting. If you trust the tattoo artist, and like what they do, you may want to listen to good advice, tips on changes in the design, location, and size. It is their profession and they do this every single day so don’t be afraid to let them make any recommendations.
